In my opinion Linden Lab should offer discounts, or lower rates beyond 1 mainland sim, and on estates for bigger business owners, apart from the small downside that playing field wouldn’t be 100% equal compared to big and small doers, there’s benefits which outweight the downsides, furthermore it could be leveled somewhat contractually.

Currently you don’t get any further “discounts” beyond 1 sim, in any way, so basicly someone who can barely afford 1 sim and who has 50 sims are in same position. Concierge support is excellent, but in no means not “big doers” only with the limit of 125USD per month.

Why there should be further discounts then you ask?

The business reasoning for Linden Lab would be that these guys bring a lot of money to them, and thus should deserve somekind of benefit from putting so much money on the table, also, giving support to 1 person, especially a business, is far more easier and cost effective than giving support to 50 people. Clear savings for Linden Lab. Also the big doers tend to buy more at a constant rate than the small business, giving discounts would just help them to ease some of the risks associated.

We know Linden Lab has done this already for Anshe Chung, it’s no big secret that she got bunch of sims for low rates back when Direct TP arrived. A lot of the “old timers” will tell you this. But today, Linden Lab does not do that kind of stuff to anyone. Arguably, Anshe Chung has gotten unfair advantage over others.

But wait! there’s reasons beyond that. There’s scammers, there’s ad farmers, false advertisers etc. However, there’s a clear distinction between a scammer and legit business : Scammers never grow beyond certain point, namely because they are scammers, people won’t buy from them anymore and thus they stop. Legit businesses however have established customer base, a working business model, and real and concrete willingness to keep things running smooth. They also give A LOT of the support to their clients who would otherwise go asking Linden Lab the same questions. They act as intermediary between Linden Lab and easens the support burden with their experience for Linden Lab.

Instead of giving something back to these people, who pays Linden Lab immense amounts, they keep doing quite the contrary (like late asset devaluation due to dropped estate pricing, thus also estate demand has lowered due to over supply).

That has to stop and turn around, in order for Linden Lab to be successfull, they should recognize the vast contribution bigger business owners do for them. Running an sim does not cost Linden Lab 195USD or 295USD, it’s all profit margin, and more a particular business buys from Linden Lab, fatter their profit margin gets to a certain point. I would argue that LL’s cost per sim is more on the lines of 50-75USD, rest is profit margin. Of course, this does not account for the development costs Linden Lab has.

For a business owning say 15 estates, just a smallish 30USD discount monthly per sim can make a drastic effect, that’s 450USD less costs each month, and this business would buy more sims faster, assume 1 per each 2 months extra due to that particular discount, and for each sim Linden Lab would profit. Assume as high cost as 150USD per sim for Linden Lab, the discounted sims would still make 215USD monthly profit, and extra sim every second month would add another 215USD profit, so in just 6months (3 “extra sims”) Linden Lab would actually be getting more net revenues from this same business. That 3 sims adds Linden Lab 645USD of profit, now with total of 18sims total discount is 540USD, an extra 105USD for Linden Lab, so why the hell not?

All i can say is short sightedness, in my opinion. Also, if per sim cost is 150USD for Linden Lab, i would say they are spending well over sensible price per CPU Core. 1 Sim uses 1 CPU Core, and you can get an dual core 3ghz xeon with 2gigs of DDR2 for around 200USD a month from open markets without any discounts. Add 10-15USD a month and 4gigs of ram. High-end servers with total 16 cores and 8gigs ram cost on open markets 600USD a month, 37.5USD per core. Bandwidth costs, but in this day and age, it’s not THAT costly (see Youtube), even individuals can get an 100Mbps line with SLA around 1,000 to 1,200USD/month, nevermind how much LESS it costs to have say 10×1Gbps pipes. One company offers 100Mbps without SLA for Just 65USD a month just as an example. I do not know the costs at that level, but definately lower relatively than what end user ends up paying. I would also argue adding each additional sim has less and less relative cost per sim.

Personally, i wouldn’t care to pay for single island 2,000USD if it means tier is 200USD a month. So even offering THAT option would be awesome.

Linden’s have a lot of power inworld, and some of them are not afraid to use them by their personal emotions and preferences, non-objectively.

There’s many stories of how people got burned by Linden’s, i have too, and i’ve blogged about it. Linden Lab, Inc. practically stole 22k L$ from me, at the sametime K.R. Engineering SLOpoly was abused to steal 114k L$ from me, SLOpoly was maliciously designed to allow that and creator refused to protect against it nor even WARN owners about it, LL blew me off after many times of complaining about that. One Linden has resolved into threatening and extortion against me, another returned my stuff without a proper reason, which i replaced and they were left there, another Linden didn’t know what an receipt is and later would have been happy to incorrectly let me get charged for 9USD due to system error and booted me off the line, while Spike Linden fixed it very fast.

I’m not the only one, IntLibber Brautigan has similar stories for example, as well as many other business owners inworld. Most of them do not talk about them publicly, on the fear of further implications.

So what is there to do if you get unjustly burned? You make a complaint, only to get a snail mail address.

Truth is, they make it so hard, that most give up the complaint process, most do not even publicly say anything, only to their friends. No one even uses publicity as their key. I, or rather, SLIB is in the fortunate position of being a prominent SL business, thus media is rather interested by our actions, so yes, i am more free to speak out loud, however most are not.

Linden Lab, Inc. does time after time show that they do not care at all about their userbase, only how they can squeeze more cash out of us, they run a very good business in that regard, that they have money printing press (land auction floods), they sell fake currency but implies it’s real while they have 100% control over it. This all happens as long as people do not challenge their decision making and ruthless control over the virtual economy. When we, the inworld business owners, get burned, they profit.

Some Lindens do use their powers as Linden’s to get their own agenda through, and for their own personal benefit, it’s this minority which gives all the Linden’s a bad image. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in, until 3rd party grids become a practical choice. At this pace however, Second Life will NEVER reach their goal of being 3D Internet, not under the reign of Linden Lab, Inc. Philip Rosedale, the founder and CEO of Linden Lab, poses as a saint, and advocate of freedom and creativity, yet allows the ruthless ass kicking of the residents. He’s stepping down, to get a CEO which can make Linden Lab profitable, aren’t they profitable already? If not, that means only one thing: They are loosing money because of the ruthless ass kicking of the residents. WE the residents and business owners are those who fill their pockets, keep ignoring us, and Linden Lab will bankrupt.

So, if you got burned by a corrupt Linden, please act upon it, make the snail mail. Do not simply ask for justice, DEMAND justice. Linden Lab created the excellent service of Second Life, don’t let them ruin it, we need to make sure justice is served, and Linden Lab gets educated for their mistakes, if it means voting with your money, DO IT!

Linden Lab announced in http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/07/quarterly-land-supply-and-island-pricing-update/ new land pricing, which is curious of nature.

Mainland sims minimum auction price is now 750USD, and new Islands are 1,000USD a piece. Mainland sims starting auction price was lowered by 500USD and Islands by 675USD. Tier rates remain the same. New mainland sims will be rolled out in 10 a day.

Aside from personally just purchasing 4 Islands, and going roughly 3 mainland sims total higher (from 180k to a peak of 350k), i do have my personal finances at risk here too.

It remains unseen how this will affect the land business, what’s definately sure is that mainland prices are going to fall. Because of lower prices, it’s highly likely that you also need to sell for lower margins, a 2L$/sqm margin for 8L$/sqm land is 25% while for 20L$/sqm land it is 10%. People WILL care. Furthermore, i do not think volumes will greatly rise because of lower pricing, tier pricing remains still very high. It’s understandable that hardware costs, and human time costs, but not even nearly that much.

In my opinion, Linden Lab should be concentrating on cutting costs, thus cutting the recurring price instead to increase the land usage by residents. I wouldn’t mind paying triple the amount i pay now, if running costs are cut into half. That’s my personal take on the matter.

200USD is a lot of money for many, and that’s the price you pay for Mainland sim monthly, think about having actually high quality estate, 300USD a month. Yikes! Finnish minimum wage is around 1100euros after taxes, per month, or 1660USD. Apartment costs roughly 755USD a month on average, and food for the month 226USD, for average Joe’s out there. The food price is actually under-estimated. that leaves you roughly 680USD a month for everything else, work travel, clothing, electricity, netconnection etc. In the end we are talking about 300USD left for “all the fun”. Considering this is Finnish guy, he has to pay 22% VAT, means he even CAN’T afford a sim! 359.9USD a month for a sim for Finnish person. 4096sqm costs 25USD a month + 6USD for premium + VAT 22%, 37.82USD a month. That’s in affordable range, but still about 12.6% of your monthly fun budget.

Because it’s cheaper to buy now, it remains unseen how this affect. In 2 months from now a good quality 4096sqm might cost ~104USD instead of ~179USD. Is it enough lower to make this Average Joe want to shell out that money? Especially when you pay in taxes that price every 3months.

Would you buy an apartment for 30,000euros (VERY VERY VERY cheap in our area, cheapest in our area goes for 60,000euros and even that is an EXCELLENT find, normal pricing is around 100,000euros) if you have to pay 10,000euros a month in taxes for it? Didn’t think so. However, rental of that would cost around 11,500euros a month, instead of 500euros a month. That extra 1,000euros is needed in case the renter does not pay up! Now, talk about INFLATION, we all would be homeless immediately if that happened, some businesses could afford a few month’s, but in the end we would have insane inflation, all prices would instantly skyrocket, and there we go, an inflation, even at the very best scenario. Just as a comparison, here you pay tax for your property only when you sell it. Construction companies would be in curious spot, material prices & construction prices would be inexistant compared to taxes.

Of course, Second Life is not the Real World, but it’s fun to see what would happen in Real World if something similar would happen.

Oh yeah, i believe Central Grid charges 75USD monthly tier at highest.

A question many have, and will ask: Why buy land in Second Life?

Answer isn’t simple, and most likely it’s personal question, but nevertheless, i will try to give YOU some reasons to consider your own land in Second Life.

Hangout
A place for You and Your friends to hangout, or maybe all bypassers, place to relax and chit chat, and do fun stuff like playing monopoly, chess, cards, Tiny Empires. A place for You and Your friends to gather.

Your hangout could be like a club, beach, garden, or maybe a camp place with night sky sparkling with stars?

Sandbox
Like building? Want to learn building? Hate public sandboxes? Need privacy or more permanent place to sandbox, maybe you are developing dataservers which require to stay longer than mere hours or a day in the place? Then you need your own land, or a sponsor. All public sandboxes have others working too, and time limits how long your stuff can be there. Using someone else’s land with incorrect permissions isn’t the best solution either, for various reasons.

In that case you need your own land. For sandbox you have a lot of choices too mainly, unless you need specific terrain.

Showcase/Portfolio
Artist? Musician? Photographer? Builder? You might need a place to showcase your works, let others enjoy, and give feedback on your works, or maybe even sell your works!

Private Place
A place to be in private. Being in private is hard in Second Life, but the need is there nevertheless. With instant messages, instant transportation, among other things, it might not be easy in Second Life. Maybe You, and maybe your girlfriend/boyfriend want a private secret place? Then you should consider acquiring your own land.

These were some of the many examples for what people generally need land, everyone have their own reasons, and no one is the same than the other. Maybe you want a club exactly to your taste?

The cost can also be offset with many ways, one of the biggest worries for new land owners is can they make the tier? How to get the money now to acquire the land?

There’s many reasons, if it’s a place to hangout with friends, you might ask them to chip in with you and have the land under joint ownership (using a group). Tier is also a lot more expensive for small land owners, you could rent your tier, for example from Ninjaland (Elanthius Flagstaff / Skye Whitcroft), or maybe just rent the land?

Sometimes you can rent land for cheaper than your tier cost would be! Think about cheap? Many people argue that SL companies vanish overnight, if you are worried over such, choose a large business doer who has been in business for longer (For example, us, SLIB Real Estate. We’ve been in business since Dec 2006, and in larger scale since Spring 2007).

On the flip side of the coin, price is not all what matters. For example, a estate with higher tier costs basicly means that they are going for more financially stable business model, and are that much less likely to disappear. We have seen several larger estate owners disappear, largely due to neglect towards profit margin, and doing “favours”(letting people go over due significantly). Small profit margin means that the company is more susceptible to market downturns.

Also, you might want a pretty LAKE front, instead of oceanfront, or high up in the hills, or snow land. These all are cases where cost is significantly higher. However, if you are lucky and watch the market, you can sometimes snatch a bargain from these types too.

Mainland vs. Estate is ever-lasting debate also, along with ownership vs. rental. (Estate land ownership is real ownership for the most part too, not lease. Land taxes are present also in Real Life.)

Mainland offers lower running costs, with higher acquirement costs … and usually worse views and no governing at all. However mainland offers definite TANGIBLE value.

Estate offers higher quality land, with governing, and usually with atleast some degree of landscaping. All estate owners are also significantly smaller than corporate Linden Lab, and usually offers more personal level service. However, estates have higher running costs, and not always have definite resale value. Estate land value is highly susceptible to whims of the market. However, this is often offset by lower acquirement price.

There is some mainland spots offering even higher quality than estates generally (or almost ever) offer, but they do come with very very high price tag. From my personal experience, these are insanely rare and hard to come by, with SLIB Real Estate having just a total of few of these places over the time so far! There is also some communities built by Linden Lab, and very often the higher quality & value is associated with Linden Content, roads, bridges etc. For Linden Lab, it’s financially viable to make these ultra high value and quality spots, while as estates have very slim profit margins compared to Linden Lab, that it’s very hard to come with any reason at all to create such landscaping, as usually the surrounding area to the very high quality spot is undesireable, or alternatively, so much land has to be tied up into landscaping.

As for renting, you never own the land, but it’s a cost effective means to get your hands on a piece of land you can call Home. Also, you can have an mortgage for the land to have means to acquire more land, and the exact type you want, now, rather than waiting and saving money for a long time.
