SL Problems, Mainostaulu and Land sales
First, you might wonder tag “from Tyrian’s Desk”, what is it for?
Well, this tag will be used for my “random thoughts” and opinions …
So let’s get on with it!
Second Life has been having a lot of problems lately, well, yesterday and today.
They did yet another maintenance downtime, to upgrade to 1.15 YAY!
Ok, the client had some nice updates, like shadowing with texts etc. But after that, SL has been mostly laggy,
or issues with very important things like Logins and Land Sales…
Oh come on! I know they are having scaling issues, but shouldn’t they limit how many is online or something finally, add throttling god damnit!
Currently land sales are down, and i was in middle of doing transferring Mainostaulu parcels from group to another, now i’m just stting idle waiting … for miracles to happen.
For the last 1-1½hours i’ve been trying to transfer these parcels, but i have gotten only a few transferred due to SL issues…
And that’s not all, i might have today loosed a GOOD land deal due to Sim crashing, just after today’s downtime.
We are talking about roughly 8k L$ of profit from that one… Now it’s probably a missed sale gawdh!
LL could do SO much more to get more cash rolling in and make SL more enjoyable, but we are currently just ridiculed with these problems.
How about if they’d add Moneybookers and Neteller as payment methods … And yet again would money be rolling in! ![]()
Now also, if they’d bring in to the DBs more hardware on the lines, and what pieces functions as web services, using LigHttpd or something similar to get more juice out of them, and load balancers, be gone would be issues with them.
Instead, what are they doing? Pushing more and more and more sims into the grid, basicly making many realtor’s lifes hard, trying to get land sold, they do make a killing tho, but this fast pace just might not be good for the overall economy. Yes, land prices could be less, but what is a big factor keeping them up?
Nope, it’s not demand vs. supply which i’m talking about, what they think keeps them up. It’s tiers, yes LL is making a killing on them also, hardware is paid upfront and then tiers are way more than a server’s upkeep costs.
In my opinion, land prices in SL are bound to be at around 20-25L$/sqm naturally as it currently is, due to tier costs. a small piece, 4k sqm costs 200USD, well not anymore, more like 150USD now, but still, it’s very costly …
Tiers down, and we would have natural drop in land prices.
How could it be done to keep profit margins the same?
Best possible price vs. performance vs. electricity consumption vs. MTBF time hardware, “not the fastest & most reliable” … Besides, you can from open markets acquire an killer server, without any discounts, for ~200USD. Yes, with that money you can get an Dual Core Xeon, with 2Gb of ECC Ram and 100Mbps connection ![]()
